The mimic octopus was only discovered in 1998. This small octopus is about 60cm in length and has been commonly observed to mimic flounders, sea snakes and lionfish. Its use of mimicry is primarily as a defense mechanism. When attacked, it may impersonate a predator or enemy of the attacker. The wonderpus octopus has frequently been mistaken for a mimic octopus but has fixed, more well-defined stripes and markings.
