There's not much to see on land in Layang Layang, occupied mainly by the dive resort and a Malaysian naval base. The best spectacle is on Bird Island a short boat ride away where thousands of migratory seabirds nest.
Rising 2km (6000ft) from the sea floor in the middle of the South China sea, Layang Layang atoll ranks among one of the world's best dive sites offering pristine reefs covered with lush coral gardens comprising many different coral species, huge gorgonion fan coral, schools of visiting hammerhead and reef sharks, rays, barracudas, jacks and coral reef fishes of all varieties.
